Commercial cleaning

Gym cleaning checklist: daily, weekly and monthly

Members notice two things first in a gym: how the change rooms smell, and whether the equipment feels clean in their hands. A cleaning plan that gets those right, and fits around your busy times, does more for retention than almost any other quick fix.

  • Mirrors wiped edge to edge, not just at eye level.

Monthly and periodic

Rubber floors need the right products

Rubber gym flooring doesn't like strong solvents or harsh chemicals, which can dry it out, fade it or leave it slippery. A pH-neutral cleaner, a well-wrung mop and good drying keep it looking right for longer. Check the flooring maker's care guide, and follow it.

Cleaning around your members

Most gyms are cleaned in their quietest hours. 24-hour gyms can be cleaned in sections, with change rooms and the busiest equipment done when the floor is emptiest. The plan should say when each area is cleaned, so members aren't caught mid-shower.

What members can do

  • Keep spray bottles and paper towel, or wipes, at every station.
  • Put up simple signs asking members to wipe down after use.
  • Ask members to bring a towel and use it on benches.
  • Make it easy to report a problem, such as a blocked drain or empty soap dispenser.

Questions about this guide

How often should gym equipment be cleaned?

Members should wipe equipment after each use, and the professional clean should cover every touch point at least once a day in a busy gym.

What's the best way to stop change-room smells?

Clean floors and drains every visit, let surfaces dry, and schedule regular grout cleaning. Soap scum and mould in grout are a common cause of smells.

Can a 24-hour gym be cleaned while it's open?

Yes, usually in the quietest hours, with areas cleaned in sections so members can keep training.
