Leather needs products made for leather, not upholstery shampoo. Velvet can crush or mark if it's cleaned the wrong way, and linen and cotton can shrink or water-mark. These fabrics always get a spot test first, and if a piece isn't safe to clean, we'll tell you.
Vacuum the couch weekly, including under the cushions, and flip and rotate the cushions to spread the wear. A washable throw on the most-used seat helps, and so does a blanket for pets. Blot spills straight away with a clean white cloth, and check the care label before using any product.
