Kew Junction has been the suburb's commercial centre since the 1850s, when the first shops opened on High Street. The 1888 civic buildings, the former post office, court house and police station, still stand near the corner of Walpole and High streets, alongside the old National Bank.
Kew is 5 km east of the CBD, in the City of Boroondara, with the Yarra River on its western side. It's known for its large private schools, including Xavier College, Methodist Ladies' College, Genazzano and Trinity Grammar, and VicRoads' headquarters stand on the site of the old Kew railway station.
